Is it really ethical to lie to a documentary crew that's not supposed to be talking to you?

A documentary crew was following someone who became the patient of a friend of mine. They started poking around for stuff on my friend, and I'm afraid they didn't get the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. At least not from me.
