Omigosh... I'm glad it wasn't as bad as the lyrics state...
I'm sorry to hear about your manuscript. If it makes you feel better, your "memoranda from the edge" series is still my favorite (continuing) story in all of fandom!!!
Oh, I know how you feel! Got told yesterday that the NSF is only funding about 8% of grants right now (yikes!). I'm counting on my experiments working in the next two months (they're a practice project - I'll be using the same technique with a different set of genes if this works), so I can apply for grants and fellowships in the fall.
I've never had an article rejected, but I have had to essentailly re-write one I was second author on, after the reviews and was very tempted tp submit it to another journal. Is that an option? Hmm, I've been meaning to write a ficlet about the IOA ordering research/grant reviews for the Stargate scientists....
I read an article in the Washington Post that the success rate for new investigators applying for an NIH grant is now in the single digits. The VA, which I was hoping would be better, is circling its own wagons. Unless a career development applicant comes from a big center, it's practically impossible to get funded. (Upstate NY does not fall into that category...)
I'm honestly wondering if I'm going to be able to make this work. People tell me, "Oh, you can always see patients." Thing is, I don't really want to. Carson's line about a crisis of faith in my recent story comes straight from me. Our country's health care system truly sucks, and during my weekly clinic I spend more time writing in charts than I do seeing patients.
Anyway, as for the paper, submitting to a different journal is definitely an option. I'm probably going to make some of the changes the reviewers suggested, but otherwise I'm going to try to get it submitted again quickly.

Personally, I would love to see that ficlet! :-)
