The lovely Friendshipper pointed me in your direction as you are a Doctor, so i hope you cna help with this.
Okay, so when a patient is admitted into hospital in the states do they bring up that patients details on a computer database? or do they need to have file sent to the hospital?
Basically, i want to know if someone was admitted and they had only their name, (And knew they were military) would they be-able to put in a search on a computer and bring up their medical history???
I would love some help on this as it's pretty vital to a fic i'm writing and i want it to be right.
Unfortunately, it depends on the hospital. Some hospitals, like large academic medical centers and Veterans Administration hospitals, have well-developed electronic medical records. I've always practiced in places like that. Other hospitals rely on old-fashioned medical charts
( ... )
It's a difficult one as everyone seems to have a different take on it.
I think if a certain CO was bought into hospital, they might beable to get hold of someone that had his records but as with the business with Sheppard's work, probably wouldn't beable to give them out unless Sheppard signed a release form and/or the keepers of his files authorised it. And at best, when and if the hospital got them they would have a limited background of his medical history.
Would they beable to at least give out the name of his next of kin?
and thanks for your help...not long winded at all.
At least from the standpoint of the U.S. privacy laws, information can be shared in an emergency. (Whether that would be true regarding the Stargate program is another story.) If a doc in the hospital Sheppard was in somehow managed to get in touch with someone at the SGC, he or she could probably ask to talk to the CMO (or Carson). Again, the SGC doc might be limited in the amount of info to reveal because of the sensitive nature of the Stargate program.
