Talking To Kaylee...

After walking away from Jayne, Simon heads downstairs and into the cargo bay, where he walks across the floor towards the infirmary. He's still a bit angry, but it's bleeding away, albeit slowly. Part of him wishes he had hit Jayne, part of him is glad he didn't

After talking to River in the engine room, Kaylee heads into the galley to make a cup of tea. She was half way into making send cup when she over heard the conversation/arguement passed between Jayne and Simon.

Than the quiet. She was expecting Simon to enter the galley and she prepared herself as such, but he didn't come. The only logical choice was that he went down the stairs to the cargo bay, so she abandoned her tea and ran back towards the engine room and took those stairs down to the infirmary. She gets to the end of the stairs right when Simon walks threw the door from the cargo bay. Her breath catchs. She knew she shouldn't have followed him, but something in her made her. Though now, she had no idea what to say as she stared at him, her chest raising and falling with her soft, heavy breathling.

He looks up as he emerges in the common-area otside the infirmary and he sees Kaylee.

He nearly stops dead in his tracks, coming the rest of the way down very, very slowly, eyes never leaving her. He doesn't know what to say any more than she does.

If she looks closely, she can still see a bit of his anger behind his gaze, but not any directed at her.

Kaylee did see the anger still there and knew that it was probably not diracted at her because she overhearded Simon's conversation with Jayne.

She swallows but stays where she was. She did promise to give Simon his space and here she was following him. Now, she felt guilty and had half a mind to turn around and go back up the stairs, but she didn't want him to get the wrong idea.

So, here they were, standing and staring at each other.

Simon shoves his hands into his pockets and rocks back and forth on his heels a few times, his gaze dropping momentarily.

"Everything okay?" he asks finally.

"That's good. I'm glad he's doin' better." she says softly before looking down at her hands.

She feels awkward because he wasn't sitting next to her. Like she didn't belong next to him and that thought alone made her shiver slightly. She knew that line of thought was crazy so she quickly tried to get rid of it. She swallows.

"River says you're doin' better about...about everythin'. I talked t'her before I went into the galley."

Oh, he'd sit next to her, but he still feels a bit unworthy to be near her, specially after their last discussion.

"Uh...yeah. She and I...we, uh....we talked," he admits. "Don't think I've ever seen my sister drunk before."

Don't think I've ever seen my sister in love before...

Kaylee starts to giggle softly, the Kaylee smile breaking through. "Yeah. She told me she threw up on ya."

Simon can't help the smile that forms on his lips, nor can he stop the chuckle from breaking out. "Yeah. Yeah, she did. She wouldn't be my sister if she didn't."

It's evident that he's since cleaned up, though.

"Oh no you don't!" she giggles as she moves to avoid him grabbing her hand and leaning foreword to tickle him.

He catches her when she gets closer to tickle him, his arms going around her to hold her tightly so she can't tickle. He does do the sneaky thing and try and tickle her back.

"No fair!" she cries with laughter trying to wiggle out of his hold and tickle him back.

Somewhere in all the tickling, Simon manages to catch Kaylee's hands in his and, amidst the laughter, his lips find hers. They brush together for a brief instant, silencing the amusement for the duration of the contact.

When it's over - and it's over quickly - Simon looks down at Kaylee as he lightly chews on his bottom lip. The laughter in his eyes turns to sorrow, and finally, after so many days of not being able to voice it to anyone, least of all himself, he confides his greatest concern to the woman he loves...

"I...I want River to have what you and I have," he says softly, obviously referring to their deep love and adoration of each other. "And I don't know if Jayne can give it to her."

Kaylee catches most of it, not all of it, but enough to warrant a kiss on his cheek.

"I love you, Simon and I ain't goin' nowhere." she whispers.

"I love you Kaylee," he whispers back, face finaly emerging to rest his chin on her shoulder.

Her hand stays in his hair and she leans her head gently against his. She will hold him like that as long as he needs it.

Or until the Captain wakes up....

Which means I think we're safe to leave them like this for the time being.
