"Ouch!" she cries throwing down the wench and putting her thumb in her mouth. Darn crib! At this rate she will never get it put together! Stupid Captain buying the hardest one to put together. Stupid hormones making her feel all cranky. Stupid tummy making her hungry all the time. Eight months and Kaylee Tam was tired of being pregnant
Simon had decided that it was best to leave his wife to do this job by herself, since she had snapped at him when he suggested thatmaybe he or Mal or Jayne could do it, and wouldn't she rather take it easy? So, he fled, but not far. When the wrench hits the floor, he's stepping back into the room and eyeing his wife warily. He crouches and regards her lovingingly. "Do I dare ask?"
A few tears in her eyes as she regards her husband with her thumb still in her mouth. Looking in aweful lots like a pitiful child at the moment. She just closes her eyes and shakes her head. The thumb is removed for only a moment for her to whisper, "Stupid crib" before it is replaced again.
He takes in the scene, and nods. Carefully, without upsetting the pile of pieces in front of Kaylee, he moves until he's next to her. He slips an arm around her shoulder and tries to coax the finger out of her mouth so he can look at it.
She protests only a bit before she lets him see her thumb. Nothing serious. Just a bit red, but that can be from the sucking. "Hurts." she whimpers.
"I know it does, baobei," Simon says softly with a smile. He looks her thumb over and, noting that nothing really was wrong with it, just a nasty pinch, he lifts it to his mouth and kisses it better.
She watches him kiss her thumb before she sighs and looks at the crib. "Gorram thing. Won't ever get it put t'gether." she says softly, Her other hand absently caressing her rounded tummy.
He holds her close, caressing her arm absently. "...Can I help?" he asks tentatively.
She nods still looking at the crib with a frown. "I think I need it." she says leaning into him. "I'm sorry I snapped. Been feelin' so funny lately."
His free hand moves to cover the one on her belly. "That would be our charming baby wreaking havok with your hormones, sweetie. It's prefectly normal. Now, why don't you show me what I can do?"
"Well, she needs t'knock it off cause she's givin' Momma a world a hurt." she says seriously, but with a playful air to it. "An' I don' even know where t'start wit'that gorram thing." she says mentioning to the pail of pieces that was supposed to be the crib. A few things were put together but not much. "At this rate, Miranda'll be sleepin' wit'us."
"She's just restless," he says, pressing a kiss to her temple before moving to sit more comfortably. He reaches out to sift through the parts.
Kaylee nods as she rubs her tummy. "Her an'me both." she says simply with a sigh as she watches Simon. "I'm thinkin' you c'n have th'next baby." she teases
Simon chuckles. "If I could, I would," he replies, seperating pieces and grouping them together by size and shape.
She smiles. "No ya wouldn't." she says leaning foreword a bit to help with the sorting. "Trust me."
"I would for you," he says, kissing her cheek. He lets his eyes scan the pieces, trying to see if he can determine which is which.
She smiles brightly. "Shoulda known that ya loved me that much." she says leaning in and kissing his cheek. "And I got th' instruction pad around here somewhere."
"I always love you that much." He helps her look for the instructions, wondering why she wasn't following them in the first place. He's smart enough to not say this out loud.
"I know." she says shifting around looking for the pad. A few minutes of searching before Miranda decides to play kick ball in Mommy's tummy. "Ooo." she whimpers leaning back against the bed with her hand on her tummy. "She...she already like t'dance." she says trying to force a smile
Simon pauses in his search to focus on Kaylee. "Just breath, love," he says, placing his hand over her belly. He smiles as he feels the tiny feet poking. He leans down and presses a kiss onto the swell, and he murmurs "easy, baby-doll. Kicking too hard hurts mommy." He adds a few caresses for good measure, too.
Kaylee nods and gives a painfully smile down at Simon. A hand moves to his back as the other lays on the side of her tummy. Miranda? Likes Daddy's voice cause she keeps kicking a bit. Kaylee gives a giggle around the thumps of pain. "She loves you."
"And I love my peanut," he says, kissing her tummy again. Then he's leaning up to kiss Kaylee. "And I love her mommy, too."
Kaylee beams as her hand moves up to lay on Simon's cheek as he kisses her. "An' I love 'er daddy." she whispers smiling. Miranda is still kicking like a fool, but the pain is lost in the cloud of love.
Simon smiles, then chuckles. "I think she's eager to meet us so she can play."
Kaylee smiles, too. "Maybe. River says its cause she's tryin' t'figure out how her legs work. I wish I c'n tell 'er t'worry about it later." she says with a shake of her head
"Well, that too," he says. "It's also exercise. But at least you know she's doing okay." He presses a kiss to Kaylee's forhead, then his eyes alight on something. He reaches across Kaylee carefully, and grabs something. He grins. "Instruction pad."
Kaylee's eyes light up as well. "Oh shiny!" she exclaims moving so she can read over Simon's shoulder.
As he skims the instructions, his eyes play over the parts. He nods. "I think I get it..."
She shifts a bit to adjust her weight. The floor was getting uncomfortable, but she didn't want to complain. She's been doing that enough lately and she wants to be a better sport. "Oh yeah?" she prompts
"Yeah, hand me that wrench, there," he says. Then he's slowly pulling a couple of pieces out of the piles and fitting them together.
She looks around a bit before spying thw wrench she threw down earlier and picking it up to hand it to him. "Need me t'hold anythin'?"
He ponders telling her the truth, that no he doesn't, but he smiles and nods. "Sure, help me hold these together." Once she's got a handle on them he'll be bolting them together.
She watches him work silently and helps where she can. Soon, they are almost done. Well, Simon is almost done anyway. He was the one putting the thing together after all
Well, when he tells the story, it'll be Kaylee's guiding hand that made the whole thing possible. But yes, they're almost done. And possibly with less grr-ing on Kay's part.
When finished Kay leans back against the bed with a hand softly caressing her tummy as she admires his/their work. "It's beautiful." she says softly. Nevermind, that the thing is just a crib
He sits back with her, sliding an arm around her shoulders. "It is," he agrees. He won't argue the point. He's learned his lesson.
She moves closer so she can lay her head on his shoulder as she looks at the crib with a soft sigh. "Thank you for helpin' me."
"You're welcome, love," he replies softly. His other hand moves to her belly and rests there lightly. "I think she's behaving, now," he says.
Kaylee nods. "She's my good girl." she whispers as her hand gently pats her tummy by Simon's hand. "Our good girl."
"That she is." He smiles. "Wanna sit somewhere more comfortable than the floor?" Because she's been there for quite a while.
Kaylee nods again. "Yes, please." she says lifting her head. "In truth, I don't think I c'n feel my butt no more."
He helps her stand, making sure everything's in place. Then he helps her onto the bed. "Better?"
Kaylee smiles and nods. "Much." She holds her arms out to him. "Though it ain't perfect yet."
And he's already moving into her arms, smiling his special Kaylee-Smile. "Of course not."
She smiles and cuddles into him the best she can with her belly. "Now it is."
He tries to accomodate her as much as possible, only settling once she's comfy. "Yep."
She gives a content sigh before cramps start to hit her. If it one thing its another. She starts her breathing and clings to Simon as her eyes shut tight.
Simon rests his head against hers, murmuring encouraging things as he holds her.
Which is when Kaylee's eyes fly open. She was all wet. "Si..Simon?" she says shaking a bit.
The only thing that keeps Simon from flipping is his keen Doctor-mind. It was unexpected, but not terrible. He gives her a squeeze, and holds onto her a little longer. "It's okay, Kaylee. I told you she was impatient," he says with a smile. And he doesn't have to leave her side just yet to get a medkit, because been carrying it around, just in case. And he promises to call Mal, but only when Kaylee's not so freaked.
"But.....but....it ain't time yet..." she says rubbing her tummy and looking up at him. "It's way too soon."
"She'll be okay, Kaylee. I promise. She'll just be a little smaller, but she's big enough," he says soothingly. He's trying to keep Kaylee calm. A Calm Kaylee is a Good Thing.
Kaylee's shaking a bit now. She wasn't expecting this is so soon. It was a bit scary. "I....I don't remember what t'do." she admits softly.
He kisses her softly. "You just have to breathe, sweetie. Just breathe and be calm. We'll keep you comfy, and once Miranda is ready, you'll know exactly what to do."
Kaylee nods and closes her eyes to focus on her breathing before another contraction hits and she flinches with a cry. "Oooohhh..."
Simon takes her hand and starts keeping time between the contractions. "I can give you something for the pain, love, but that requires me getting up."
"Than get UP!" she bites out before she doubles over again because of the contraction.
...Right. He's getting up to get that shot. And just before he preps it, he calls Mal. Because he won't get a chance after this. And then he's right quick with the administering the shot.
Kaylee's eyes close and she leans into Simon with a soft whimper. "This isn't gonna be any fun, is it?" she whispers.
Mal? was up and getting dress quickly when he got Simon's call. This was one baby he was not going to miss.
Simon makes sure that Kaylee's comfy, and in the proper position, then removes her pants and hikes her dress before draping a sheet over her legs. He cleans up the mess made by her water breaking as best as he can, placing a clean, fluffly towel on the bed between her legs to catch more mess. And then he's giving her a brief check-up to see how she's doing. "Looking good, sweetheart. You're doing fine."
