I can't believe I miss teaching. Among other things, of course, but teaching?

Clearly this world has driven me insane.

At least I have my yerba maté now, if nothing else of worth.

[Attached for anyone interested: pages and pages worth of theoretical biostatistical epidemiology models, hand-calculated and plotted. Bored Osamu is bored.]

But... teaching is a good thing!

I'll just say this: my exams for all the non-biostatistics classes always include both short answer and essay questions. My final exam for my Medicine and Culture class was nothing but essay questions.

You'd think students would master their language by the time they're in junior/senior/graduate-division classes.

Well, a student who won't apply themselves is another thing entirely, and very well should be disciplined properly. But, well... the act of teaching, of sharing your knowledge with others, is something someone should take pride in.

Well, that part can be enjoyable when the class bothers to pay attention. I just hate the grading aspect. Also annoying is when students come bawling about imaginary dead grandmothers and expect me to believe them.

There are other ways to teach.

Oh, um. I'm Sabine Alshire. It's nice to meet you.

Good evening, madam.

Unfortunately, my material is not exactly light enough to be turned into fun and games.

How are you doing?

And neither is chemistry, now that I think about it.

Fine, you?

None of the sciences are very easy once you start getting into the higher levels of education, heh.

Man if you aren't having fun, if your students aren't having fun?

You're doing it wrong.

Honestly, it's the grading part I hate, and the bullshit university students try to pull to garner sympathy and easy grades.

Can't argue with the grading system, way too tight ass if you ask me, but man watching the little snots squirm when they know they've screwed up and begging for a free boost, the bribes, that's one of the best parts of the gig.

If there's anything about teaching I miss, it's my students being able to understand my instructions. I don't know why I decided to try and teach someone literacy when I wasn't trained in it.

I'm a university professor, I think half the time the first and second year students don't even try to understand the material.

Ah, so nothing really changes from elementary.

Not really, no.

In fact, sometimes I think their language skills worsen.

What did you used to teach?

Reply

dr_ichijouji May 14 2009, 02:35:13 UTC
Biostatistics; Death and Dying; Medicine and Culture; Advanced Epidemiological Methods; a few seminars in population biology, genetic epidemiology of chronic diseases; Special Topics in Epidemiology that can include epidemiology of aging, infectious disease control, or medical anthropology and epidemiology, depending on the semester. Generally this varies, but I tackle 2-3 classes per term.

...Mistress? You actually understand that?

...okay, I understand maybe a fifth of what this first page is saying, but that's what teachers are for, right?

You're interested in science like that?!

Yeah, I know, weird, but mom and dad are too specialized. I want to learn more about stuff like this. Ever since I was little, actually, but I could never find someone to teach me and with the war, it became impossible back home.

So, uh, would you like a student?

Well, I can't guarantee that this would count as academic credit, but, sure. How much statistics do you understand?
