David looked up from the herbalism book he was reading for the umpteenth time in a half-hour, comforted by the sight of Rachel's heart monitor line peaking steadily and evenly. A smaller monitor to the side showed far more peaks and valleys, likewise comforting. The beeps had been turned down, as had the soft, rhythmic sound of the baby's heartbeat, but it still beat on, ready for one of the Father's to come in and indulge themselves in one of their small listening sessions, as at least one of them did an hour. Rachel slept easily, or seemed to--from what he knew of heartbeats, hers seemed to not show any stress, any pain--just normal and healthy beats
