Most of the photos I’ve taken of my daughter are with a now nearly eight year old Canon SD500.  Every once in a while, I think that I should replace it with something newer and faster: Theda tends to move at near-mach velocities in her calmer moments, and I miss a lot of shots waiting for the autofocus.  I’ve been thinking this now for a good two ( Read more... )

Get a Panasonic DMC-LX3 or, since it seems to have been superceded, a DMC-LX5.

DON'T get the Canon Powershot A3100. We have it at work. It's OK, but not better than any cameraphone.

We've had great experiences with Panasonic's cameras. They use rather good Leica lenses, even in the more affordable models.

If you're looking for recommendations, http://thewirecutter.com/ is where I go to when I get lost in a sea of detail. They have some good things to say about the S100.

I will not comment on what you should get, because hell, I don't know. I will just say - you are absolutely right. Fewer products, better differentiated, sell more.

Have you read about the "too much jam" study? IT proves your point.
