...but.... I'm not patient. I'm mostly just angry and disgusted.
And, it's not like banning gay marriage will actually prevent anyone from being gay, being in a committed homosexual relationship, or even having children, so I have no idea what the religious tyranny out there thinks it's protecting.
On the positive side, though, most of the same arguments against gay marriage were used many years ago against interracial marriage, which clearly is no longer illegal. I would guess that the tide will turn on this one within 20 years at the latest.
So are we waiting for old folks to die so they don't vote the wrong way, are we waiting for more of our generation to get off their asses to vote, or are we waiting for some opinions to change?
And do "civil rights causes [take] a couple decades to go from crazy ACLU fodder to common sense" because old bigoted people die or because people get used to the idea that *gasp* everyone should have equal rights under the law?
Given the turnout in this election, we're not waiting for more 20-somethings to vote, but for the kids in HS & grade school to hit 18. And yeah, for the grandparents to kick the bucket.
I don't have the exit polls from 2000, but it worked out that the non-geezers were about 58% anti-marriage in 2000 vs 55% today. So the tolerance slope among that fixed group of people is a bit less than 0.5%/yr.

I'm not expecting the USSC to overturn gay marriage bans anytime soon. The liberal judges probably aren't that liberal, and even if Obama gets to replace one of the conservative judges, the court will probably stabilize itself. Keep in mind that when O'Connor was the swing vote, Justice Kennedy voted with the conservative bloc. When O'Connor stepped down, Kennedy intentionally became the swing voter to prevent partisan changes in court policy. My guess is, if a conservative justice were swapped for a liberal, Kennedy would swing back.

Nods... as you have followed this much more than I have.
I can only hope for more than 1 term, and more than one appointment, with a *Very* sympathetic congress.
We shall see. I am hearing and reading chatter about 8 going to the Calif State Sup Court, and having it ammended, due to the fact that a constitutional revision, is not the same as a constitutional *amendment*, which requires a special session of state legislature, and a 2/3 vote in support.
Let people that like playing legal mumbo jumbo fight over it... I just need to figure out what kind of an art project, to make with my wire sign holders...

Assume all three are under 50.
Problem solved.
