Here's a question for Harry Potter slashers:
What do you think of JK R as a writer? I've noticed that quite a few of you don't think much of her as a prose stylist - does that make it easier to write fan fiction based on her stuff?

I think she's actually pretty good, but her basic prose style looks really simple at first glance. Her towering strengths are plot and characterisation. While the last book, HBP had some flat bits (Voldemort's back-story) the plot is pretty magnificent and much tighter than OotP; but OotP was a gift to fanfic in that it was wide, sprawling and hugely detailed (rather fanfic-like, in other words); and it had the main character having a major strop all the way through. You didn't get Harry's excessive emotionality carrying on to Book 6 which I think has been both a relief and a disappointment to the readers...
I think most fanfic writers delude themselves that they actually do get close, but that's a whole other issue, on what fanfic writers are actually doing.
