Despite a storied history of not being able to actually make bad issues go away by ignoring them, Chase hadn't really learned his lesson. When his father got to town, he tried to bury everything. When his mother got sick, he stuck his head in the sand for a while. When he killed a woman because of his own neglect, he just tried to pretend it never ( Read more... )

Stopping by the Compound for new books from the shelf had now become something of a daily habit for Annabeth. After all, she might as well amass more knowledge that might be useful back home, if she even remembered it when she went back home, and even if she didn't, it was still in her blood to do so. Annabeth, as a daughter of Athena, could not see any gathering of knowledge as a useless venture, even if she couldn't keep it.

Poking her head into the door, she noted that the clinic was otherwise nearly empty. "You like doing paperwork that much?"

"I absolutely do not," Chase said as he leaned forward and put a heavy amount of weight on the file in his hand, letting his touch stay there as he looked at Annabeth, giving her a half-smile. "But paperwork is better than confronting something you're avoiding head-on, right?"

It sounds like a leading question, the types adults ask when they wanted to talk about things. Annabeth supposes that she does owe Chase to some extent for rescuing her underneath the mistletoe, so she decides to take the bait, shifting the piles of books in her arms to get a better grip on them. "Who are you avoiding, and why?" She'd probably offer some sage advice about how it was better to just confront things, but that would be pretty hypocritical seeing how she'd danced around telling Percy how she felt (in a way that was not telegraphed through punches) for ages now.

Chase would have rather asked about the books, but he wasn't ruling out that possibility given the right moves. He managed a tight smile and gestured slightly to the chair. "We really can't talk about you?" he asked hopefully. "I mean, I'd love to hear what you're studying."
