the seishun 18 ticket is super cool, but if you plan on coming back to toyama with us i think the japan rail pass is actually a better deal if you can afford it, because you will have to take the shink back from kyoto to toyama, and the JR pass includes the slowest shink. the catch about the JR pass is that you have to purchase it BEFORE you get to japan, and then you get a voucher you can present to people at the train station in japan with your passport to get the actual pass itself. so you'd have to call a travel agency maybe.
let me know what you think! :o

yeah that sucks that 9 days is right in the middle :/ we'll have to work that out.
it is relatively the same amount of difficulty to get to toyama from osaka/kyoto or tokyo, it's just different directions. the thunderbird is actually NOT a shinkansen - it's a limited express train, so it's slower. i think you would be fine getting from tokyo to us with a JR pass and some knowledge of japanese. if you're gonna come straight to us you could also fly into narita, transfer to haneda airport (easily done - there's a shuttle bus that runs between them and does so often), and then fly to toyama airport (TOY, best airport abbreviation evar), where we'd be able to pick you up. from here we can then shink to/from kansai together.
also i just learned that the school year will be ending that week right before you'd come in, so it should be easy for me to take days off!! :D
