If the third person is being a jackass or is trying to "stick up" for X even though it's none of their business, yeah, that's annoying.

Though I would rather someone actually speak TO me rather than reply later in the entry so I don't get it in my mailbox, saying shit about me because they're a little pussy that wants to be snarky without having to back up their comments to the person they offend ¬_¬ People are so much braver when they're anonymous.

But if it's general chitchat then I don't mind at all ;9

And that's true. And even over the internet, too, stuff that's said here (I do it too) that would never be said irl, and even just talking behind people's backs. "Avoiding confrontation."

I've seen it in a few LJ's, even got bitched about it once, but it's never quite sat right with me. I don't get it either, and I've never even heard any decent reasons as to why. Just "don't reply to comments OMGKTHX."
