It was the time of the month when the moon was at it’s fullest, almost consuming the entire sky. Stars dotted randomly here and there, but it didn’t feel right to Dean; he missed the times when he would lay on the hood of the Impala with Castiel cuddled into his side, just breathing each other in.
That was well over a year ago now, and every night since then, Dean has looked up at the same sky clenching on to any memory of Castiel that he can get. Every now and again, he would remember something new, like the time Castiel got jealous over Dean’s fascination with Dr Sexy whilst watching Dr. Sexy MD. Dean had simply snorted, pulling him into a tight one-armed hug. It was the first time he had ever seen the angel express that emotion, and over a fictional character of all things.
It wasn’t enough to say that he missed Castiel. And for reasons Dean couldn’t even begin to explain, he was still hoping that he would come back for him. He yearned for it. Hell, sometimes he even prayed for it.
But the hunter knew that Castiel had more important things in his life now; he had his angel mojo back and a freaking holy kingdom to take care of. Dean was the least of his worries.
Reaching into the cooler stored at the side of the Impala, Dean pulled out a beer, cracking off the metal top and taking a swig. “This one’s to you, man.” He pointed it toward the starlit sky.
It was silent for a long time after that, the wind picking up, getting colder. When the moon had disappeared, Dean decided it was time to go, for he had every night of his life to remember his angel.
