As a marine, Smoker took being near the ocean for granted. Whether sailing or running his motorcycle along the shore, water was always there. Alabasta had been nothing short of a strange experience. A desert in the middle of a drought caused by a pirate who was legalized so Smoker couldn't touch him. Fucking brass. Still, as a marine, devil fruit or not, water wasn't something Smoker feared. He had a healthy dose of caution about it - whatever his friends thought, he didn't actually have a death wish, but for a devil fruit user he didn't think it was too bad. He couldn't swim, he would always be cursed to drown, but the ocean was something to respect rather than fear in his mind.
Sitting in Crocodile's ironic prison where they meant to drown, Smoker still wasn't sure if what he felt could truly be called fear. At least not of the water. Drowning would be the worst way for a devil fruit user to go - the only way for most devil fruit users - but the ( ... )
