Everything You Don't Want
“This ain't cause I love you, you know,” he says, something fierce and aching in his voice, even muffled as it is against her neck, his lips hot against her throat, the wall of his ship pressed cold and firm in contrast against her back. “I don't love you.”
It's a truth and a lie all in one, what he tells himself to blot out the image of Inara, to paint over it with her without tainting the past; he can talk all he wants, when River hears words behind the words, behind his fingers, under his skin as it's exposed to her hands, piece by piece. He wants her, and he needs her, needs to sink into her because she knows, as he does, what it is to lose and believe again, beyond hope.
She hears, and she knows, knows that love is more complex than neurons and chemistry and words, more than a label or an excuse for his hands between her legs and her mouth on his ( ... )
