Prompt: I'd like to buy a vowel

"You know, there's one thing I've never understood about Japanese." Yukimura Seiji was saying to his friends before classes started at Rikkai's Junior High division.

"What's that?" His friend Yanagi 'Tarou asked, quickly scribbling out some last minute homework, then checking it against Sanada Gennosuke's finished homework.

"Why is it that 'n' can stand alone." Seiji said, writing out 'Tarou's full name of Rentarou out in romaji. "Why, when every other letter has to have a vowel after it, 'n' gets to be special. I mean, if you didn't understand the language, wouldn't you expect there to be a 'u' after that 'n'?" Seiji was saying, then wrote out 'Gennosuke' under the 'Rentarou.'

"It's just the way things are, Seiji." Gennosuke said, trying to stop this conversation before Seiji started getting wierd. However, it was too little, too late.

"What, did 'n' say to the other syllables 'I want to be special.' or something? 'Let me stand alone!'"

A few of their classmates looked over at the trio, where 'Tarou was paying very close attention to his homework and Gennosuke had a long suffering look on his face, and he'd only known Seiji for a few months.

Their homeroom teacher entered the room during Seiji's rant, but before the first bell. He had a bit of a smile on his face as he walked past the group and smacked 'Tarou lightly in the head.

"I told you to finish that last night."

"Gennosuke and I practiced a bit too late." 'Tarou said, licking his lips, not remembering he was talking to his father.

"I can put a stop to that."

"So then 'n' says 'I'm just too good for you vowels.' And decides to be a loner just to make all the other consonants jealous." A few of the students were listening to Seiji, but only because his rant had slipped into English and everyone loved listening to him speak in it since it was his first language.

"Also, this isn't your classroom, Rentarou. Get. I know how Takahashi-sensei can be about late students."

"You're no fun, Dad. Can't you pull some strings and get me with these two?"

"No."

'Tarou got up. "See you guys at lunch then." He stared at Seiji, who was taking some deep breaths.

"'N" bought the vowels off for their silence on the stand alone issue." He said in Japanese, smiled, and took his seat as the final bell rang.

Renji just stared at his friend's son, wondering what had gone on before he came in. Then he decided he was better off not knowing.
