California has voted a (slim) majority "Yes" on Proposition 8 - that disallows same-sex marriages.

Exerpt:
I know it's going to sound bizarre, but even if Prop 8 actually passes here, it's kind of fantastic in a weird way.
See, the CA Supreme Ct. ruled that a ban on gay marriage was unconstitutional according to the CA Constitution. If the citizenry then chooses to ban gay marriages, there are couples ALL OVER this state who are affluent and who will fight to have their previously legal marriages protected. This is NO small issue. All we need is one case of long-term loving gay partners who want to fight the state to have their rights reinstated. Then we have a US Supreme Court Case that will undoubtedly be funded by gays and those of us who support them.
Now, I'm sure you're thinking "BUT THE SUPREME COURT IS FULL OF ASSHATS!!!" and some of that may be true - but even asshats on the Supreme Court are bound by stare decisis regardless of whether or not it agrees with their morality. Overturning the large number of cases that have had to do with the right to be gay, the right to marry whomever you want, etc. would send the whole country into outrage.
So yeah. Hope for the future. :)
Love you, gays! <3
