I thought about it this morning, and I thought of an alternate to the PokeDNA. Mayhaps the scientists are working on the Pokemon language. And they'd need new samples that aren't so influenced by humans, wild Pokemon and rare Pokemon that haven't been seen too often. The PokeDex would listen to speech from the Pokemon, and try to reference it with other Pokemon speech until it can make a translator.

Just a thought.

Now that sounds like a great idea. It's easier to see why they'd need trainers to go out and catch new Pokemon this way.

It's been seven years since the first Pokedex was introduced. Seven years since young trainer Ash Ketchum took Kanto by storm with his victory over the Elite Four, the youngest trainer to ever accomplish such a feat. Over the past seven years, Pokemon technology has rapidly evolved. Pokedexes have become commonplace trainer tools, with new versions constantly in development. The Pokemon League has evolved, too. New trainers have taken their spots as gym leaders and members of the Elite Four. Gym leader Giovanni was removed from his position because of his involvement with the criminal group Team Rocket, and Ash soon replaced him as the newest gym leader for the league.

In the midst of this upheaval, a group of professors has rented the basement convention room in the Celadon City Department Store to hold their yearly conference on Pokemon science. The keynote event is the unveiling of a new type of Pokedex, invented by and presented by Professor Willow.

Many white lab-coated men and women sat in the convention room, on the many propped up chairs, facing the large screen. Not easily recognized by most people, the squiggles that vaguely resembled graphs being displayed on the screen were audio tracks, certain sections highlighted in an electronic blue ( ... )

Translating Pokemon languages! Kendra's thoughts whirled as she lurked in the doorway to the convention room, her attention riveted to the lecture. Although she was technically supposed to be setting up the refreshment table in the back of the room, she and her fellow department store clerks had opted to listen, instead. She was pleased with that decision now. This was cutting edge! This was something else! This was... distracting her from the next part of the lecture ( ... )

Professor Willow continued, though most of what he said was the same thing, only rephrased. His peers seemed not to notice. After the professor finished his lecture, he took a bow and accepted his usual applause. Hopefully, his many hours of work would bring in some prestige. Prestige meant a larger budget, and Professor Willow was determined to crack this code ( ... )

Professor Willow tapped on the console in the corner of the room, accessing his Pokemon storage account. Blake merely looked on at the professor, absently adjusting fingering his shirt-tail, which he never left tucked in ( ... )

Kendra nodded and followed the professor. As they walked through the city towards the harbor, Kendra turned to Blake and asked, "Which Pokemon would you like?" She shrugged. "I kind of want the Oddish, if you don't mind. I've always had a liking for Grass-type Pokemon. Is that going to be a problem?"

"It most certainly will not be a problem. I was hoping for the Psyduck, but I figured it best to be polite. I've had a penchant for Psychic types. I'm sure you've heard stories of what a Psyduck can do."

"Yeah, Psyducks and Golducks can get pretty powerful. They learn both Water and Psychic attacks, don't they?" Kendra said. "Well, we might as well tell Professor Willow which Pokemon we want."

Kendra jogged ahead and caught up with the professor. She had to say his name several times before she got his attention. "Sorry about that," said Professor Willow. "My mind is already back at Fuschia City. Have you and Blake decided on your Pokemon?"

"Yes, sir," Kendra said. "I'd like the Oddish, please." Professor Willow produced the Pokeball and handed it to her. Kendra took it with barely restrained glee.

"And you, Blake?" the professor asked his assistant.

"Nicely done," Blake said with a clap. Type-advantages could be rough, he'd read. "Not too many sound bytes on that one, though. We've got quite a trip ahead, so I'm not too worried about that. Excellent work."

His Psyduck looked on with curiousity. It also cringed to itself at the sight of an Absorb attack. Sai would have to keep on Olive's good side. "Duck," it offered the Oddish.

"Let's look for some more Pokemon," Kendra said. "We'll get some more sound bytes, and Olive will get to kick some more bug butt." She pulled her Pokedex out of the back pocket of her jeans and pointed it at Olive. The reading on the screen said that Olive was nearly at full strength, definitely strong enough to battle another Pokemon. Absorb was a useful attack. Olive reached out with a leaf and patted Sai gently on the head.

Not more than a few yards up the path was a tree where a bunch of Metapods were hanging out in their cocoons. "Jackpot!" Kendra crowed. "C'mon, Blake, let's fight 'em. I've read that Metapods are sooo easy to fight 'cause they don't even know any attacks. Your Psyduck should get some battle experience, too." With that, she ordered Olive to attack the hapless Metapods.

Sai smiled back at Olive, or rather it tried to smile as best it could with a bill for a mouth ( ... )

"I'll do the same," Kendra said. She slipped on a pair of sweatpants and a loose t-shirt and then looked at Olive. The Oddish was dozing on Kendra's pillow. "I'll need my pillow, you know." The Oddish looked at her and then rolled to one side. "Thanks. You want to sleep in your Pokeball or...?" The Oddish just continued to doze where it was. "All right," said Kendra. "Fine by me."

Kendra lay down with a sigh. She was beat! She hadn't thought that telling a Pokemon what to do would be that exhausting, but combining walking through the forest with the rush of battle, and you got one tired girl. Kendra closed her eyes. She barely noticed when Blake came back in to the tent.

Not quite nails-on-chalkboard, not quite fork-scraping-plate, some hideous feeling crawled over Blake's skin as he heard the Butterfree's attack cry. Despite this, he remembered to hit the sampling button on his Pokedex.

Blake tossed out his Psyduck. The poor thing shuddered at the sight of the larger bug. It looked back at Blake with pleading eyes.

"Sai, you have to be brave for us. You should take hits slightly better than Olive. Just distract it for a second." The Psyduck gave a stern nod, and turned to face the Butterfree with a "Duck," that seemed to dare the bug to try something.

"Kendra? Call Olive back. One more attack like that won't end happily for your Oddish. We need to run. I don't think we can take that thing."

Kendra was ready to argue, but for once her thoughts were faster than her mouth. She nodded and called Olive back into the Pokeball. She scooped up her pack, and said to Blake, "We're probably gonna need to leave the tent. Let's just go!"

"It's okay. I should be able to carry it since it's packed away. A little extra weight should be a nice workout," Blake said with a smile. It seemed that he liked to make jokes when he was nervous.

The Butterfree, tired of allowing them an intermission, made a move for the two trainers as Blake was scooping up what he could. Sai stepped in the way, leaping at the bug, claws outstretched for a scratch. The Butterfree countered easily by flying over the Psyduck's head, and sprinkling a yellow powder.

"Duck," Sai managed. It was frozen in a comical pose, claws in a battle-ready position yet laying on the ground.

Blake quickly called Sai back to its Pokeball.

Making sure his things were secure on his back, he turned to Kendra. "Now we run."

Kendra needed no second telling. She darted off, making rocket ship whooshing noises under her breath, pounding down the overgrown forest path. So completely concentrated on running was she that she didn't even remember to stop until the bright sunlight at the edge of the forest set her blinking.

"Wow..." Kendra panted as she jogged to a stop. She leaned against a tree trunk, squinting against the mid-morning sun. "That was some run." She looked around to see if Blake was with her.
