Hey Now, hey now now....

I saw The Sisters of Mercy at The 9:30 Club Tuesday night.

To start off, I hadn't slept well the night before and I had gotten up at 7am to take my car in for maintenance I also hadn't eaten much that day. Work was busy...and by the time I noticed that I hadn't eaten...it was time to leave. By that evening...I was exhausted. I munched a quick sandwich on my way over...but it turns out I could have taken my time and gotten a decent meal. Hindsight and all that. I got to the club early and did my best to stay awake. About 30 minutes after I arrived, troyfish showed up with K.(I'll let her out herself if she wishes). The three of us chatted for a while until the first band got onstage.

The opening band, The Warlocks, started up around 8:50. They used way too much fog. I think they were trying to cover up how badly they sucked, but it wasn't working. They had two drummers..although it took a while to notice since they were hidden by the fog almost the entire show. I don't know why they had two...they both played the same beat in every song. There might have been some minor differences in their routine...but nothing I noticed. Note to The Warlocks, two bad drummers to not replace one good one. They had an attractive guitarist that wasted a good opportunity to engage the crowd with her playing. She could have done something like...oh, say...appear to be interested in the music she was making. She just stood there, looking down much of the time. When she was one of the few people we could see onstage, she did not make for a good presence. The singer either sucked with moments of decency...or simply took a long time to warm up. We went downstairs after a few songs. The last song or so that he sang sounded okay...but by then, S.(Once again, I'll let her out herself if she wishes) had joined us...and we weren't interested in finding out if the band got better with time or enough alcohol.

I started losing track of time by then. I must have been yawning about once a minute. I decided to grab a drink from the bar downstairs...partially because I was still wound up from work and needed to relax, and partially because my mouth still tasted like the sandwich I had eaten earlier. After about two sips, I knew most of that drink was going in my barrel (old Irish legend). It was mixed very strong and I was already sleepy. I knew if I finished that I'd fall asleep before I made it home...and either miss part of the concert...or find myself sleeping behind the wheel. Neither option appealed to me.

We moved up to the balcony for the real show. At first, there was no room to stand near my friends, so I got stuck kind of to the back and one side where I could barely see. But after a few songs, somebody on the other side of my friends moved and I stepped in. I felt like I was watching the show through someone else's eyes I was so tired. They had a great fog and light show and made great use of effects..a bit of echo here, some reverb there. They did feed back into the system a few times...and as always, the base was up so hugh it could shake one's insides...but they still sounded great. I don't know if was where we were or a testament to the skill of the band and sound crew, but I could actually hear most of the words fairly clearly. Usually in that venue, if I don't know the words of a song...gods help me try to figure out what they are actually saying. The Sisters played some great songs, Temple of Love, Mother Russia, Vision Thing, Lucretia My Reflection...but they didn't play This Corrosion. I kept waiting for it...and waiting. I figured they would end on it....but no love. I think I would have been really pissed, but by the end of the show I was all but dead tired, the smoke was getting so think I had trouble breathing, and I had somehow developed a huge knot in between my shoulder blades. All I could think about was getting home and getting to bed. In retrospect, I probably should have offered K. a ride home, but I really wasn't thinking at all by that point. I'm actually surprised I didn't doze off during the ride home.

All in all, I had a great time. Meeting either one of K. or S. would have made the night well worth it, as they both seem like very cool people. Between meeting both of them...and an amazing concert thrown in.... Yeah, it was a good night. I just wish I had been awake enough to have made a better companion and have been able to enjoy the show more.
