Dracschick's review of new PBS Dracula: The good, the bad and the ugly or (with spoilers)

simply just what a big mess. Yep, didn't like it. Though not for the reasons that I thought I wouldn't like it. Ya see, I cheated and read blogs of others who saw the movie so I knew what would happen. But, I didn't actually see the movie so some things that were previously described bothered me a little less. And some, bothered me a little more.

Interesting. Thanks for the review. Now I don't feel so bad for choosing "The Dresden Files" over "Dracula".
I'm sure it'll re-air eventually and I'll probably watch it when it does just to see it, but I don't feel like I HAVE to see it right away. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts.

Because I have cable now......... dracschick February 13 2007, 03:27:57 UTC
and it's set up a certain way, I can only watch the same program that I tape. I decided to watch The Dresden Files as a rerun since I wasn't certain when they would show 'Dracula' again. While this Dracula is something to see (IMO, one should see all the Dracula movies:), it's one that doesn't need to be seen immediately IMO. Hope this week's Dresden files were good. It's been a very good series so far. And Terry Mann. I do so love him:)

I don't have any way to tape shows so I'm left with just watching what is most important to me. LOL Last night it just happened to be "The Dresden Files". A gal's got to have priorities. haha. I do hope they show "Dracula" again soon because like you said, one should see all Dracula movies, no matter how awful they may be. I shall have to keep my eyes out for a replay. But I'm glad that you agree that this was one that doesn't need to be seen immediately. I would have been upset if this had been "the world's best version of Dracula EVER".

This week's Dresden episode was really good. I enjoyed it anyway. I'm definitely addicted to the show now... completely.

This week's Dresden Files ROCKED. Excellent episode. A far superior choice to that miserable mess that was Dracula.
I live in Toronto. The building they use as the Chicago Police Station is just down the road from me. South Bend Indiana is actually Queen Street West. Come visit and I can take you to the bar they used for Kirby's. *g*

Yeah, I wasn't terrribly impressed either. Harker was such a minor character in the movie and there was almost no Dracula/Mina(WTF?!) I did end up liking Steward, surprisingly. Overall, my fav part was probably the Dracula/Lucy bit. It was really hot.

Yep I agree and......... dracschick February 13 2007, 03:32:02 UTC
as a Dracula/Mina fan, felt sad and a little 'cheated' that they didn't do a nice blood exchange bit betweeen them. Cause that was too important to be left out. IMO, the last 30 min of the movie was very rushed. Sort of like the director thought, "Uh oh, I've used up too much time and now I have to do all this story so I'm going to go really, really fast now." Yeah, that sucked. And not in a good way:(

PS--Seward was awesome. One of the better ones I've seen. I wish he had been in a better adaptation. Talent was wasted IMO.

I really hated it. I liked Gerry in Dracula 2000 even if I did not like the film. This version just stunk.

I felt a little less strongly than you but....... dracschick February 13 2007, 03:44:56 UTC
I would also categorize the movie as a 'miss' and not a 'near' one. No sense of direction/cohesive vision in the director or the writer. Give me a Dracula story with romance or horror or humor. Just something, anything. Not a mix of things that don't make sense.

I forgot to watch it! I'm so forgetful. I swear I'd forget my head if it wasn't attached.

I read everybody's comments and your own. It doesn't sound as though I'll like it if I do end up seeing it. Perhaps the most faithful movie version I've seen was with Gary Oldman. I also liked some of the Laurence Olivier version, although much of it wasn't faithful to the original. I'm going to have to seek out the 1977 BBC version since you think so highly of it.

that's too bad........ dracschick February 13 2007, 03:51:39 UTC
I'm like that too. Actually, I missed the first minute or two and then ran like crazy:)

PS--Jourdan's version is only available on ebay. I have no idea about the quality of it though.

Sorry to hear the movie was such a bummer! Sounds like they sacrified a lot for the sake of time. :(

well, actually the beginning was paced well. But the ending went waaay too fast.
