What an interesting concept! At the end, when you mentioned cloning plants, you got me thinking... in my old garden I had some Quatre Saisons roses, damask roses that are so ancient (thousands of years) they can't grow from their own rootstock, and have to be grafted onto a more modern base. So the clones have survived, but they lack the sturdiness of the original. If you don't prune them carefully, the modern base rose can take over and the Quatre Saisons disappear. There's a story in there somewhere...
