[RL w/ Connors--Here There Be Dragons]

Much to Philomel's embarrassment, the first time Dr. Connors had been brought to see her, the promised dragons had been...sorely lacking. Still, she'd introduced him to Philip, Marta, and Baodelio, and though the beasts themselves had been absent, there were still enough notes, photographs, recordings, and illustrations to keep them well occupied ( Read more... )

Connors had been slightly disappointed with their last visit. There had been no actual specimens for him to examine, but he could tell that Philomel was dedicated to her work. Despite studying such fantastical creatures, the more he saw of her work, the more he began to realize the seriousness and dedication she had toward these magnificent creatures. She took meticulous notes and sketches on the dragons, spanning every possible facet of their life cycle. And Connors was eager to learn more about Philomel's work. Perhaps he'd be able to somehow apply this knowledge to his own studies in herpetology.

Apollo had once more agreed to bring Connors to Philomel's world, and dropped him off at the previous meeting spot. He shielded his eyes in the bright sunlight and looked about for his newfound colleague.

"Hello? Philomel? I'm here!"

"Dr. Connors!" She leapt up off the rock that had served as a perch and waved one arm. Oh, that hadn't taken long at all--Rosa hadn't had time yet to grow bored with waiting and leave. She hurried to join him, bobbing something that could have, charitably, been called a curtsy, as she came.

"I'm glad you were able to come so quickly!" she said brightly. "Follow me, if you please? She's down at the beach..."

"You can thank Apollo for that." Connors gave a warm smile. "Such a nice young man. He helped me find my scarf, you know? Don't know what I'd do if I had lost it."

He followed Philomel's lead. "Now, I remember you mentioning some of the dragons that you have been studying. Which one are we going to meet today?"

"I'm not entirely sure 'young man' is an appropriate moniker for one of his kind," she said with a chuckle. "That was kind of him, though."

She stuck her hands in her pockets as she led him down the path. It was narrow, and edged on either side by thick, tall foliage, but even and well-tended despite that. "We shall be meeting Rosa," she said, "and I couldn't have asked for a better visitor. She is the single politest dragon I have ever had the pleasure of conversing with."
