Geese In Spring, Part I [1/?] anonymous June 18 2010, 18:02:19 UTC
Yeaahh I'm a bit slow. And busy. Sorry :| But I figured I'd post some of what I had so I wouldn't sit on it forever. Thanks for the kind words so far!

When Devin woke, it was with the odd sense that he had just been arguing with someone. Some bit of nonsense in the Fade, I'm sure, he thought muzzily. Try as he might, he couldn't remember who he had been arguing with, nor the substance of the argument. It must not have been very important, he decided.

Still half-asleep, he tried to sit up and was stopped by two things: some sort of restraint around his waist, and nauseating waves of pain from the area around his left shoulder. For a fraction of a moment, panic danced on the edge of his awareness, but he closed his eyes and took a shaky breath, and forced himself to remember. The fight -- that horrible battle with the Darkspawn. The ogre had hit him with a rock, and then that Dalish elf had shown up. The elf had finished off the ogre, Devin remembered that much, but then what had happened...? Slowly, he opened his eyes again ( ... )

(lol. Today's captcha is "bucolic resolution". INDEED.)

"Ah!" Seeing that his... charge? prisoner? was awake, the elf grinned broadly. The expression actually startled Devin, though he tried not to show it; he'd seldom seen the taciturn Dalish people display so much cheer. "You are with us again, I see."

Again, that odd accent that Devin couldn't quite place. Perhaps the whole clan spoke that way? Maybe they'd come here after the Blight because of the boons granted to the Dalish by the King, or some such thing. Hopefully he'd have the chance to ask later. At the moment, though, the mage had other priorities.

"So it would seem," he said in reply to the elf's greeting. "May I ask why I've been tied down?"

"Straight to the point, hm? I suppose I should expect no less from a Grey Warden." the stranger chuckled as he knelt in the narrow aisle between the bed and the wall of the aravel and reached under the bed. In a moment, first one rope, then the other, fell slack, and he reeled them in just a little too slowly, the loose ( ... )

"Well then, thank you, Zevran. ...For everything." Devin's gaze dropped to the empty cup in his hand as he spoke. There was no shame in being saved from a difficult situation, but as far as the mage was concerned, the situation had been his own damned fault to begin with ( ... )

Stupid leftover bits. oh hai, I finished a part :o

"Maybe not, but I can't just... sleep..." Even as he said the words, Devin felt a sort of heaviness at the edge of his thoughts. He looked up sharply at Zevran, who smiled with a hint of apology, but also a flash of amusement -- probably for successfully tricking him.

"I'm sorry, my dear Warden, but I was advised that quiet rest would be best thing for you for a while. I will wake you before evening, though, never fear."

The mage tried to glare at Zevran accusingly, but was rapidly growing too tired to focus. He was only dimly aware of lying back with the elf's assistance; the part of his mind that was still working puzzled over how the other man had drugged him. Was the entire waterskin laced? Something done to the cup beforehand? Or was the rogue stealthy enough to have done it right in front of Devin without his realizing it?

He hadn't decided on a satisfactory theory before drifting off to sleep.

I lied. This scene should really be included in Part I here, because there's a larger time jump afterwards. So! Here's a bit more.Zevran was good to his word, and at dusk, he accompanied the Grey Warden to the clearing where his friends' pyre had been built. He had assisted with this grim work, which the other Dalish had taken on as a matter of respect. The Wardens had wiped out a substantial band of Darkspawn, after all, at the cost of their own lives. They deserved a suitable funeral insofar as such a thing was possible, deep in the forest with no Andrastian clergy, as most of the Wardens would have doubtless preferred. At least Devin could perhaps provide some suitable verses or a eulogy ( ... )

After a solemn chant from the Dalish (it was a prayer commending those fallen in battle to Falon'Din, and Zevran made a note to explain it to Devin later), the mage stepped forward. "For those of my comrades who looked to the Chantry, I offer verses from the Canticle of Trials, Chapter One," he said with quiet dignity.

Maker, my enemies are abundant.
Many are those who rise up against me.
But my faith sustains me; I shall not fear the legion,
Should they set themselves against me.

Zevran hadn't expected that particular Canticle, but it seemed appropriate. As Devin began to recite, he listened with what he was sure was greater interest than his fellow hunters, the words of the Chant bringing back old memories of the grand chantries and tiny slum churches of Antiva City. He didn't precisely miss the Chant or the chantries, but the sense of nostalgia after so many years in the forest was strange, and not unwelcome.

Maker, though the darkness comes upon me ( ... )

"If he seems to be pushing himself overmuch, do not hesitate to shut him down, Zevran."

Anon expects you to make good on this threat, you realize. Possibly sexily.
