Information for my sock pal

Jul 29, 2005 09:25

Foot size
All measurements are in inches.
  • 9 ¾: Length (tip of toe to back of heel)
  • 6 ½: Toe to start of ankle
  • 2 ¾: Height of ankle
  • 8 ½: Circumference of ankle
  • 8 ½: Circumference of foot (±¼'')
  • 10: Circumference of calf at desired height (7-8'' off the ground)
  • Shoe size: US 8½ women's, medium width

Color preferences
For socks which are all one color, I prefer blue. My second favorite color is green. I prefer darker colors for at least the foot of a sock.
However, I'm less fond of blue in multicolor combinations.
Color combinations that I like are:
  • varying shades of a single hue, especially if it's blue or green;
  • red, orange, and yellow;
  • orange, yellow, and darker green; (this is an example, not a suggestion for the yarn you should use)
  • black and white or black, white, and gray;
  • earth tones;
  • but not not not pink and purple.
This list is not exhaustive. If you find a particularly nice color combination that you like, go for it.
Things I don't like are orange on its own, pink, pink and purple together, or variegated yarns with very short lengths of each color. (An example is here.)
Fiber preferences
All of my current winter socks are made of superwash merino wool. I tend to use a lot of Dale of Norway Baby Ull, because it is soft, machine washable, and comes in great colors.
If you have some non-superwash yarn that you'd particularly like to use, or a nice, soft nonmerino yarn, that would be okay. I do prefer warm fibers I can wear in winter.
I can wear socks made of up to DK weight yarn. If you use yarn that is thicker than fingering weight, please work the foot in plain stockinette so I can get it into my shoes.
Design preferences
I want socks that will keep my ankles warm, so at least 7'' from the ground to the top of the sock.
I am no good at colorwork, so if you are, colorwork socks would be neat. If not, cabled or textured or lacy socks are fine.
I'm a nerd, I admit it; I'd be happy with something geeky. (Or not. Your choice.)
I own both short-row heel socks and gusset heel socks. Both are all right. I've never done afterthought heels; if you like those, that would be fine too.
