The work load here at the State Materials Office was piling up pretty bad for about two weeks, but things have calmed down again, and now I'm back to being bored

I don't think it's that. Denver also has back pain and the mattress is working for him. I think my back is just not accustomed to such a flat, harder surface to sleep on. Either way, it still sucks.
