My biological father has not been a part of my life since I was about three or four years old. The last time I ever saw him, I think I was six or seven. The last I ever heard from him, it was shortly after my mom had her heart surgery, which was about five years ago

I have a cousin who went through some of the same things. His bio father left when he was a lot younger and he had the same sort of conflicting feelings. But his stepdad turned out to be a true and total asshole, so as an adult he felt he did the right thing by forgetting about him and reconnecting with his bio father. They have a pretty good relationship now. So I think the conflict you're feeling is normal. Whatever decision you make will be the right one for you.

(Also I didn't know you're planning to have kids soon!)
