you're right about gesso.

as far as i know, shelaq goes on like paint and dries clear. i think there's another word for it and possibly better spelling for the one i came up with :)

Gesso doesn't dry clear. It basically works as a primer, you can paint it onto anything, paper, unprimed canvas, etc, and it makes the surface suitable to use oils or acrylics on it.

Acrylic medium dries clear, however. That stuff is basically liquid plastic. You can get it in matte or glossy varieties.
