Random Topic 62

August 23: Had a random interview at WBRZ. Really hope I get this job, he seemed a bit more optimistic about actually contacting me later weather or not I got the job. I would be making less, but might be able to still work at my current job for a few hours a week to make the same amount per week.

August 25: I've been trying to get Unison to back-up my C: drive, but keep running into permission problems trying to write to my USB drive. I think I may get a removable hot-swap drive. Would be recognized as a regular drive so hopefully wouldn't have the same permission problems.

August 26: I've been watching a lot of server/NAS videos lately.. really hoping FreeNas 8.1 comes out soon.

August 28:

Movie to watch in the future: Death Race 2000

August 30:

'Dragon' should be a gender.

August 31:

Started to see and smell a light layer of plastic-like smelling smoke outside. Found out today that the local swamps are on fire.

September 04:

Found out I didn't get the job at WBRZ as I didn't have experience... Just dont' know how to actually get that experience yet. :(

Trying to get the back-up serves running again that I built last year. It's going to cost me a lot more money though due to the number of hard drives I still need to buy. Deciding to go with a 4-drive Zfs Raidz2 set-up. It will still give me the two drive failure protection that I was planning on with a 3-drive mirror set-up, but it will allow me to expand to twice the size.

September 05:

I think I really like the pan flute.

Transfuring information from my first back-up server to an external drive. it's 8:30 pm and still has 6 hours left to go. Definitly will be leaving my computer on tonight.

September 06:

Apparently my laptop is infected with the Conflicker worm. :(

September 07:

Now that I have FreeNAS 8 installed, I can work on getting SSH keys working... ugh, hate trying to work with keys.

Inspector Gadget is a show about how one man endangers a child over and over.

September 11:

I just can't get this FreeNas to work! Really wish I had the money to buy more hardware to test on.... or a professional NAS solution.

I've been watching some Kabouter Plop videos. I can tell that the actors for the show really do enjoy playing the parts, and the music is not bed either, even though I have no idea what is being sung.

Finally got SSH working on my FreeNAS box using a key. I was forgetting the '-i' key for the identity file. Now to think about buying some more hardware (hard drives/drive mount/raid card).

Just got SSH working with a key from my main computer, to my first server, then from the first server to the second server. That is the order that data needs to travel so if I can't get it to work in any other direction, that will be fine.

Trying to figure out how to do the drives on the servers. I plan to use the ZFS file system's Raid-Z2. The formula for calculating the space is (Size of smallest drive) X (Number of drives - 2). I originally planned to have four drives in the array. The thing about ZFS is that the number of drives in the array is the number of drives that will always be in the array. So an array of four drives cant' be expanded to five or six. I'm trying to figure out how much data I need in the future, and thus, how to set-up the arrays. I can either do one 4 drive array now... with 5 TB drives coming out eventually, that would give me a total of 10 TB. I could then add another 4 drive array for 20 TB total... way in the future. But I could also have one 6-drive array for 20 TB. I all ready have 4 drives.

Figured out what I am going to do. I will fill the server that will go to my parents' with six drives to make the Raid 6 array. I can then move the server up to AR with my parents. I decided that it doesn't matter what I do with the server at my place as I have constant access to it, and it will take me a while to save up for an additional six drives. So step one will be buying three drives and a raid PCI card. Step two will be figuring out what to do about a case / drive access. As my parents arn't exactly computer people, I need them to have a way to easily replace the drive. I all ready have three hot-swap drive bays installed, but may need to buy a new case to install some more... Oh yeah, and I need to buy another UPS.

September 15:

Ordered four 1.5 TB hard drives that were on sale and a Sata port PCI multiplier card this morning.

I really doubt that Inspector Gadget is really Penny's uncle, or that Dr. Claw is a real doctor.

September 16:

Recorded my friend doing walk cycles for reference images that he wanted. Feels good to get my camera out again.

September 17:

Four new hard drives installed in server #2. Luckily I had just enough cables and adapters to do it.

September 18:

I think my typing skills have gone down-hill since my old keyboard broke. My old keyboard was only $10, but it was the right size/shape/button layout for me.
