A very good point and I think you're right that everyone is guilty of this perspective to some degree. Unfortunately this is the sort of thing that's difficult to change by yourself. If you change your own behavior such that you're more considerate towards your loved ones but then they don't respond in kind, it's quite easy to feel like you're wasting your time and return to that old mindset of 'what about me?'.
I've noticed this more and more in my own social dealings since I moved away from Massachusetts and it became more difficult to maintain those relationships from a distance. I'll often put in the extra effort to stay in touch with someone for awhile but as soon as I try to rely on them to make the next move, the communication just dies. It really is a two person job unless you're okay with being consistently disappointed.
