I think when people spend healthy chunks of their lives mastering something and then the underpinnings of it changes (invalidating all the time they spent mastering it), they receive negative feedback equal to what they got from mastering in the first place.
There's a big difference between adding new stuff (151 Pokemon? Caught 'em all? Here's 50 more) and changing old stuff (these 50 Pokemon no longer exist) to the people that're invested in it.
