I sometimes think that I've quoted the same 10 songs over and over in... 4?... years of post titles

The slippery thing is that it isn't manipulation to pursue what one wants when you're fully honest. It's manipulation when one is working to get what one wants without being honest about it, either in articulating what it is that one want or in promising what one will do to acheive it ( ... )

I was going to write a response to this post... but your response here pretty much sums it up. Well put.

I agree with your mom.

There's nothing wrong with trying to get what you want. Every living thing does it... even the weasel.

People who always do what other people want are significantly less interesting than people who try to change their environment to improve their lives.

If somebody tries to manipulate you, you should manipulate them right back.

I think that manipulative only means using social methods to get what you want. That means using other people. I think that it's important to remember that when you use social power to an end, you really put forth very little work. It's a lot like getting something for nothing ( ... )

Could the comparison be made between manipulation and objectification? Manipulation treats the victim as an object to be adjusted and controlled, not as a person to be respected equally and honestly. This gets into murky territory with the distinction between objective respectful action vs. subjective internal respect... but that's why the law has the "reasonable person test." Of course, where you're going to find all those reasonable people in the context of potential manipulation remains an open question.
