and though my mind is cut by battles fought so long ago

well, maybe not, but of all my friends, i think you'd be the one to fully appreciate this website:
www.omniglot.com
it has about a million alphabets, syllaberies, etc., including everything from Mayan and Proto-Hebrew to fictional alphabets from Tolkein's books, the Zelda games, and Futurama. actually i think you'd get a big kick out of the fictional alphabets section.

hope life's treating you well.
love,
rachel

I dare say I discovered how a gift giving economy works the other day. Gave the large Samoan downstairs a piece of pizza the other day and he responded today with an enormous plate full of food . Every gift given here is very loaded with social implications of patronage and social superiority. It's understood that if I don't reciprocate with a larger gift of food, or move into a different sphere of gift giving, I will be his social inferior and he will have made a statement to his immediate group of associates, and I to mine, that I am subservient to him in matters of social repartee. This obviously has tons of implications. Often works the same in the States come to think of it. Moral: don't give gifts in another culture, and often within your own, unless the implcations are CLEAR! But then again where would all the fun go? It's often enjoyable to be as socially ambiguous as possible. Keeps people guessing and benefits flowing where none were expected. Lets one know who courts favor. ;)

Heh! I totally agree on the social ambiguity. I capitalize on that fairly often, actually, although my native naïveté and irrepressable guilt / honesty tends to fuck it up eventually. Although I do hear that makes me more confusing, yay.

I'm starting to adopt a "gifts are never a bad thing" attitude, which I think could lead to some odd results someday. I guess we'll see how that goes; indeed, whether it even lasts.
