OTTERS

I was on the phone with Mom this evening, and she told me that Dad's friend Tommy had seen what he thought were beavers at our pond when he was fishing there several weeks ago. Dad went to investigate, because beavers could not stay at the pond, as they would dismantle the dam. Strangely enough, he discovered that they were otters! SO COOL! ( Read more... )

Otters rock. When I come back in another life I want to be an otter.

The good news is that their diet doesn't consist only of fish -- the North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis) also likes birds, insects and amphibians. Apparently they also have a sweet tooth for crayfish and crusta.ceans

An otter's life would be a good one, without a doubt. I've never seen a sad otter.

Birds, huh? I wonder how an otter goes about catching a bird... I bet it's something to see. I'll have to pass that along to Dad in the "Preserve the MelRae Otters!" campaign. lol I can definitely see them eating crayfish and amphibians...

I just keep thinking about Denis Leary's "No Cure for Cancer": "What are you?" "I'm an otter." "And what do you do?" "I swim around on my back and do cute little human things with my hands." "You're free to go."

I won't get to see them until we go up to Mom and Dad's for Christmas, but I've made Mom promise to take pictures of them for me before then. =D I'm so excited!!!!

Awwwww... I love otters so much. I wish you could have seen the two that I spotted playing in the bay by San Luis Obispo. I have pictures, but they aren't very clear.

Sea otters are definitely the coolest. When we went to the Audubon Aquarium in New Orleans, we showed up just in time to watch the sea otters eat lunch, which was super cool. I can't wait to get pictures of our non-sea otters (pond otters?).
