Just looked up an article on google about the International Development of the U3A. The date of the article is 1995 so much may have changed since that time. But in it the author writes that there are 2 distinct models for the U3A. a) the French (and first) model which is linked to Universities and places of higher learning, uses professionally ( Read more... )

According to Wikipedia, there doesn't seem to be any U3A in the United States at all, at least as of 2008. (I doubt if that's changed since then.)

Hmm, seems like USA does the same sort of thing but in a variety of different ways with a kind of ad hoc and piecemeal approach - which as you say , is totally in keeping with the way the whole of North America grew into one country, but still made up of entirely different parts. Let's face it , it took about 900 years for GB to become "a whole" and Europe is still struggling to do that, so it's not surprising that such a new country as "America" should still have a piecemeal approach to everything. I have no idea whether there is anything available in your area (obviously there was as you were teaching it!!!)that you would be able to join and go to. But honestly, if you can find something, I would definitely say go and join it. It's great fun and always good to meet new people and socialise whenever you can.
