Want to see me think WAY too much about a comic book for kids?
Spoilers of course for the finale of the Kaboom! Darkwing Duck comic series.
The Darkwing Duck comic ended kind of awesomely by having the last issues cross over with the Ducktales comic. At the very end, all the villains from both Ducktales and Darkwing Duck get sucked through a portal into the "Wasteland".
...is...is this the set-up for a sequel to Epic Mickey?
...if not, can it be?
I mean, I'm willing to accept that I'm reading too much into that. I love Epic Mickey, probably more that is really healthy, definitely more than the game deserves, so I grant that I may be reading much more into it than is there...but that's an awful lot of coincidences...
I thought it was kind of funny when Kaboom! announced a Ducktales comic that would be written by Warren Spector, head honcho on Epic Mickey. After all, he's stated in a number of interviews that he really wants to make a Ducktales game. I thought it was just Disney throwing him a bone.
When the crossover started and our heroes were fighting against nefarious black ooze (often described by characters as being like ink) that would corrupt anything it touched, I thought it was just an odd coincidence.
*cough*
When Negaduck revealed that he had been sent to a "wasteland," I took it as a cute little nod to the game since Spector had helped write the comic. And anyway, it's not like "wasteland" is a word that is strictly from the game.
Though I'd love to see a wasteland version of St. Canard...I think the art dropped the ball there a bit...only a bit!
They even brought in the Phantom Blot as a villain and it seemed just like another reference to older comics that they liked to throw in...but at the end, it just seemed like it was screaming out for a continuation.
Warren Spector: Please, Disney! Please let me make a game to answer this!
I'm sure it's really just a combination of nods to the game from Warren Spector combined with coincidence, but now that the idea's in my head, I really want to see it. I mean, a game where you play against mutated, warped versions of all these villains? I'd play the hell out of that! Haha!
(EDIT: In thinking about it a bit more, it occured to me that it could be read as prequel to the game, but that doesn't entirely make sense with the game's canon and I like my theory anyway, it's more fun! XD)
On another note, Disney, please release the Tales of the Wasteland comics in print. I don't have a smart phone. I can't download the app! I would like to read them too!
------------------------------------
Sadly, though, this did mark the end of Kaboom!'s run on Ducktales and Darkwing Duck and it's a real shame to see them go, especially the latter. I'm not angry with Disney for their decision, it makes good sense. There isn't much point to farming your licenses out to other companies when you own one of the largest publishers. That's just good logic. So there's no resentment there, but I will miss it.
This version of Darkwing Duck was simply one of the best comics on the shelf. It was made by people who clearly had a real love of the source material, both on the writing and art sides, with lots of references to past stories, but beyond that they understood the world and the characters really, really well. I'm a HUGE fan of the cartoon, even now, and the comic still managed to have some of my favorite Darkwing Duck stories.
Even if you weren't a fan of the cartoon, though, it was just a great book. A superhero story that never treated its audience like fools, but never got too full of itself, either. I mean, this book almost made me cry for Quackerjack. QUACKERJACK! It was just a fun, entertaining read in a market that's sorely lacking on those things.
If you haven't gotten a chance to read this one yet, I definitely check it out. All of the series except this last story have already been collected in trades and the crossover is due out soon as well. If you can only get one, though, I wouldn't get the crossover. It's a great story, but it's not perfect. It felt a bit rushed at times, I think it would've been better at six issues rather than four (though it got down the most important thing - the extreme personalities of Scrooge and Darkwing butting heads! Haha!) it's good, but if you're only going to get one, get the first story, "The Duck Knight Returns." The whole series was good, but that story was the best.
As it stands, I thouroughly enjoyed this entire series and if it has to end, this is a great place to end it. Bravo, guys, and thanks for the awesome books!
