Well, there goes my last reason to head to Silver Spring...

Trading cutlasses for cufflinks, pirate bar walks the plankSilver Spring is a great place with a lot of neat shops and restaurants...but it's a PAIN driving there, so I don't do it much. I've found alternatives to most of the stores I used to go there for, and with this change, I'm completely out of reasons to bother. The fun is gone ( Read more... )

Gotta say, going to Silver Spring is something I haven't bothered to do in years.

Glad to see you back, I should have written you earlier. I meant to point out Nostalgia Chick's review of Song of the South (I'm sure you've watched it).

I realized I never told you that I moved to Halethorpe, so I'm up near Baltimore now.

Also, were you aware of this:

Hope the link makes you happier.

Haha, that link is awesome! And just at the right time as I'm really starting to hate Cartoon Network. Good to have something to remind me of the glory days. XD

I did see that review of the Chick's...and it was AWESOME. She always entertains, though.

Did you move due to your job moving? or was it just more convenient or cheaper or somesuch?

The move was basically more out of convenience. My friend had bought a condo a year ago and then got a job in St. Louis. I decided that after 10 years in the same apartment it was time to move on. Saves him the trouble of selling the place, gets me a full size kitchen.
I do feel a little stuck in a suburban development instead of being able to just walk to downtown Laurel (such as it is.)
So yeah, now I have a 20 min commute to work, which isn't so bad, all things considered.

But yeah about the bar. It really seems like they could just scale back a bit, retrain some staff, adjust the menu and cocktail list (the grog wasn't described in the most flattering light) a little, and be fine.
The weird thing is that the new place sounds like the last thing a Spike TV viewer would want to see. Way to know your demographic.

Then again Spoony did point out that Spike had an anti-pirate bias:

The old version was truly a labor of love, and you could tell that, but the staff always seemed to be having a lot of fun, and I always enjoyed going there. We would even invite people over with the express purpose of going out to the pirate bar one night.

...but as you say, I can see why a change might have been necessary. This just seemed a bit overboard. "Oh you had a fun, goofy theme? Let's make this new direction as POLAR OPPOSITE of that as we can with a boring corporate motif" because that's what people want when they're eating.

Oh well. At least now I don't have to brave Silver Spring anymore. (As an example, they have this weird setup through their downtown where it's like a 7 lane road with dashed lines separating all the lanes and lights above indicating how many of them you can drive on. It makes it easy to change for rush hour, but hella confusing to drive.)
