As is may turn out, I may have caught a few nasty viruses on my laptop.  Now, I'm no tech geek, but when said avast scan results go from 60, to 62, to 63, to 80, then we have a problem.  I knew something was wrong when I couldn't defrag.  I had removed all my personal stuff onto my mother's laptop, and it STILL told me no space for defragging.  So

Is that downloadable stuff free? What I don't understand is if I wipe out everything, what is left in the laptop? What do I need to put back into it? And, how do I do all of this stuff?
