Glad to hear what's going on with you! I hope you have an excellent time in South Africa... Where does your family live? (I've been thinking a lot about South African authors, so I'm curious.)
I admire couples who decide to break up after a long marriage... I mean, as long as they don't do it in a nasty way. It seems like too many people stay together just because they're so afraid of change or of admitting "failure"--& probably also because they forget their kids are grown-ups too, & are hopefully mature enough to understand their parents are human beings with lives of their own.
My family live in Johannesburg, and I have a few relatives in Cape Town too. The beach house we're going to is in the Eastern Cape though, on the coast.
Yeah, you're right. I'd rather they were apart if they're only making each other unhappy, rather than sticking together out of habit and fear of change. My mom is pretty hurt, but they're doing fine on the whole, I think. At least their kids are adults who can see them as people rather than solely as parents. It helps. :P
I definitely sympathize with your mom... It's generally so much harder on women. I wonder whether she might enjoy Joyce Wadler's I Was Misinformed columns in the NYT? I feel like a weirdo for having read them all, but they're hilarious--& it's great to read about a retirement-age woman who has a healthy romantic life. It seems like there's this prevailing idea that as a woman, you're basically a fossil the moment you turn 40 (which is not at all true for men).
Thank you! And I'm really excited to be going on holiday! And he's really nice. He works in Tokyo, so we actually only get to see eachother over a weekend every two weeks or so. Aw.
