Rant warning
I started this rant on Facebook earlier, but I'm gonna finish it here for the people who still matter. Has anyone else noticed how retarded rock radio has gotten in the past year? I mean even worse then before. Hell radio in general is sliding into the abyss. They wonder why people would rather have mp3 players or satellite radio in the car when "Real Radio" is free. I will clear up the confusion for them. Radio sucks. I'm in and out of my work truck all day, and its getting to the point that I'd rather listen to the wind blow by then hear the same 4 fucking songs everyday all the time. My real frustration is with grunge now. For some unknown reason, maybe the reunion of Alice in Chains and Soundgarden, program directors have decided that its necessary to play grunge 30 minutes of every hour. EVERY fucking hour. Earlier today, on 98 rock, I heard Spoonman -> Man in the Box -> Some fucking Nirvana song. In frustration I switched to 102.5 thinking that would fix it, and Nick's name for the station (102.5 The Floyd) struck as they finished up a Floyd song into.. you guessed it, Alice in Chains. No I wont rub your nose in 'spit'.
Ok on my preset list is 5 Stations. 105.9 The Buzz, 102.5 The Bone, 98Rock (a long time standby of mine), 107.3 The Eagle, and 93.3FLZ. I'll break down each one and my irritation with it.
105.9 "The Buzz"- When they break away from clone emo music which blows 100% of the time they sometime punctuate it with something worth listening to. This happens so rarely that I hardly even bother flipping over to it. Recently, its even less, because they're filling up the slots that aren't 14 year old angst music with alot, TONS, of Nirvana and Alice in Chains. Not to mention their DJ's are so mediocre and boring that even the filler in between songs is not worth listening to. All the DJ's manage to sound bored or airheaded without fail.
102.5 "The Floyd"- Renamed appropriately. Pink Floyd/Led Zepplin most of the time. Thats surrounded by Hair rock, some of which I don't mind, but its the same 3 hits each band had in the 80's. I think 20 years later you could probably play some B sides and other songs off the albums without offending anyone. I'm sure the licensing is not that expensive. Sadly they changed formats again and expanded the spectrum of 'Classic' Rock to include the early nineties. On the up side of this is that it included Metallica, and some really good rock. The downside is that they too are filling hour after hour with Alice in Chains/Nirvana/Soundgarden. The only salvation for this station, that makes it my most listened to is Bubba. I don't listen really for Bubba, but his surrounding crew. He is a fat ignorant closet racist who has managed to surround himself with talent.
98Rock - In my opinion the worst fall from grace. A standby in hard rock around here for years. I know I'm not the only one in high school that listened all the time. Now its mediocre cut down rock songs, Some ok DJ's. The afternoon show "cage cult" is sometimes entertaining when they aren't stuck on stoner humor. The problem persists here. They play more good solid rock then any other station out there, but its completely encased in grunge. Back to back grunge. It's just gotten to the point where i've started listening to two stations that I never thought I would.
107.3 The Eagle- I must say this is rapidly becoming my new favorite. The Beatles; The Eagles; Crosby, Stiles, Nash, and Young. Things of that era. No grunge. Good solid songwriting and guitar work. The problem with it is that its mostly slow tempo soft soothing music. My job requires something faster, and heavier to keep me moving. For overall quality its a hands down winner. Just to slow and folky.
93.3FLZ- I know this will be a suprise to some people but yes, its not on my preset. I avoid their morning show like a plague. Its some of the worst radio I've ever heard. I won't mention his name or he'll sue me. Most of the music is crap, auto-tuned robots with generics beats. On occasion a song breaks through and is worth listening to. The tempo is great, upbeat and interested DJ's and the fact that it doesn't put me to sleep got it sneaked into my presets.
If you read all this you may get the impression I hate grunge music. I don't. I love soundgarden and alice in chains. I think nirvana is mediocre. alot of it I like, just not the same 4 songs every single time. Same ones they've played since the 90's. Except Alice in Chains, who has a new album. It's mainstream rock not grunge and it was ok, untill they played Check my Brain on the radio 23849237847239829374293874932 times a day. Now I don't want the album. I won't buy it thanks to the radio. I should send this to cox radio and clear channels offices, but I know i'll get a generic prefabricated response.
