Sad Day

Wherein we recall Pickett being a moron and are saddened by the turning point in a bloody struggle for freedom.

(Or you know, are happy 'cause the South lost. Both are cool.)

Pickett really is a very, very big moron. Though, I hate to point this out, but Lee authorized it and gave it the thumbs up. After watching the Union at Fredericksburg, he REALLY should have known better. It was Longstreet who thought it was a bad idea....

It's true. He should have. Really, the whole battle was a very bad time for Southern generalship. Lee was not on his game, largely due to the recent death of Stonewall on whom he relied a great deal. He also very much wanted to have the war over by that point and was too reckless.

So. I've been thinking about this from the position of the nation's birthplace and I think I know where I stand. I think the south had the right to secede, but such secession needed to come from a democratic process, with states holding referenda and getting the populace to formally renounce the U.S. Constitution, not by firing on U.S. government bases.
Had they approached secession that way, Lincoln could not have drummed up support in the North to fight it.
It's the difference between asking someone for your pen back and stabbing someone in the foot and grabbing your pen from their pocket, both might work, but one is more likely to make the other person stab you back.
