So, we keep a shotgun in the house without any rounds in the chamber but with rounds in the magazine, such that you have to fully pump it in order to discharge it. We also keep it well hidden with safety on in a secure place near ish to our bed so we can have it in case of home invasion

He checked the chamber to see if it was empty. Of course, by doing so, he cocked it and loaded it.
