The writing of others is the best procrastination for the writing one has to do theirself

The Spanish war and other events in 1936-37 turned the scale and thereafter I knew where I stood. Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism, as I understand it. I don't believe in apolitical art. Go ahead and tell me it exists, point to the Mona Lisa as an example, and I will tell you only great political statements cause as much controversy as whether or not the subject is smiling or whether or not anarchism is a viable model for living life.
