Great philosophy... everyone should look at themselves as a place to start... but what if your own issues aren't quite the priorities that others seem to be?
In my personal experience (that's rather lofty beginning, isn't it?), the people who love you are the ones who really matter. If they truly love you back, they'll observe your changes (hopefully for the better) and be inspired to improve themselves. I've noticed that to a lesser degree in the work environment. Intelligent people will respect someone who doesn't allow themselves to simply react to their environment. Idiots..... are idiots, and you should take it as a compliment when they despise you, because it means you're nothing like them.
I guess I was thinking in terms of what "strangers" are up to. You might personally have debt problems, a messy house and a problems swearing. Across town, however, there may be a polluted river that needs government clean-up, a crooked politician who needs to be voted out of office and other "bigger" and "wide reaching" issues. Can you wait for the people most closely related to those things to make their changes whie you change yourself?
As for changing yourself and setting a good example, I agree with that, in general.
My friend is actually going out with the City of Raleigh official whatever-they-are this weekend to clean up a polluted lake. She called someone, they referred her to another number, and it happened! It made me very happy.
If you look at one of my previous posts, it says "It's not denial. I'm just very selective about the reality I choose to accept." It may not be the healthiest attitude, but my stress has all but disappeared. As for crooked politicians, I really don't care, and I'm not convinced that I should. I care if they're hurting other people, but when they start doing that, the people usually step in and regulate. I am all for a Federalist government. I think that politicians would be much more motivated to perform well if they only got one chance at it.
It's very sad that the world is not wanting to improve itself. If everyone focused on improving him/herself first and foremost, we wouldn't even be having this discussion. That's a very naive way of thinking, though. *sigh*
