very interesting observations. even though you say that it's easy to act like they aren't there, they're still def. a common presence in rome...and i feel like while you can ignore them, you always recognize them on some basic level if that makes sense. On a similar note, have you encountered gypsies? They are all over roma and italy and i remember they carried cardboard signs. apparently, when a "stupid american tourist" read the sign he or she would be pickpocketed. never happened to me...but i'd imagined it does happen more often than not. one aspect i noticed to with the people who sell goods - who will sell anything from bottled water to cheap sunglasses to flowers - is that when the police are in the area, they will scatter..quickly packing up their stuff. i always wondered though, and you kinda touched on this in your essay, how many of them are actually poor and how many of them are just scamming you? is there really a way to tell?
