Early Morning

May 01, 2009 10:13

We had an early, slightly dramatic start to day when Drama Prince woke up screaming. He threw up at some point during the night and was horrified when the early morning sunlight revealed his soiled PJs, sheets and Moosie. So at 6:30, I was doing laundry, while DK bathed our son. DP seemed none the worse for wear. He ate most of his bland banana ( Read more... )

It looks like I had misunderstood the term "pandemic". It's the infectiousness of a new illness that triggers to use of the term, not necessarily how many people are affected. Thank goodness for Wiki.

But yes, we need to stay calm. Yes, take precautions - and as a mom, you do this anyway - but it's a bit early for panicking.

Oh, and I hope that DramaPrince is feeling better. Poor little guy.

He seemed to bounce back as soon as he knew his sheets were being laundered. For a child who's generally rough-and-tumble, he's oddly finicky about things being dirty.

Kids are funny that way, aren't they? GMinor would be perfectly fine covered in mud from head to toe as long as her hands weren't sticky.

I am so with you. I have a relative who is prone to hysterical fear-mongering and it drives me up the wall. Mainly because I know that it's not rational.

In perspective, the *regular* flu is far more dangerous than the swine flu. So is getting in your car and driving to work. But we deal with those things without thinking about them.

The fear-monger doesn't want to hear that, I've realized, because their dire warnings are not meant to be taken as advice, but rather as a cry for comfort. They deal with their own fear by warning others. I just have to keep telling myself "she's just feeling scared, it's not about me."

Generally I deal with it by listening and ignoring. You gotta live your life.

Virtually every news item I've heard/read reports data in concrete numbers, as opposed to the the percentages you typically hear in regards to season flu.

THIRTEEN Canadians in SIX provinces with SWINE FLU! sound far more dramatic than 0.0000004% percent of the Canadian population.

Exactly!

I mean, I'm not saying you should seek out people with swine flu and kiss them, but just keep washing your hands, and be smart.

Did you hear about Egypt slaughtering all their pigs? (Though it seems a little bit more like cultural bullying that actual medical concern.)

WHO was all over that saying "YOU DON'T NEED TO DO THAT!"

It seems over-reaction is the norm.

According to my mom the mass pig slaughter in Egypt is evidence that Swine flu is poised to become the next Black Plague.

We do have a pandemic...of irrationality!

I was living in Toronto when SARS hit and once my mom told me on the phone, "If you can, try to stay away from Chinese people."

I'm right with you. Try working in agriculture right now. I just talked to the executive director of Alberta Pork. He's having a fun time.

I can't even imagine! Between this and listeriosis, I'm thinking it's a stressful time to be in the livestock business.
