To Tip or Not To Tip

There's a neat little bake shope across the street from my office. They have interesting breads and pastries as well as teas, coffees and other warm beverages. The staff are lovely and chatty. It would all be sweet, tasty biscuits if not for one thing: the tip jar ( Read more... )

tipping, i think, has gone too far. i am supposed to tip the waitress. the coffee barista, the stylist, the person who washes my hair, the cab driver, the gas guy, etc. etc. etc. Feeling deluged with all of these tipping opportunities, I have decided to only routinely tip those people who make less than minimum wage (waitresses) unless my service was truly exceptional. i would never tip in that situation but would always warmly thank them instead.

Yeah, I don't usually tip in those situations. Because nobody is serving me! I kind of find it funny that we tip certain people but not others. Like, we tip a hair stylist for an already expensive haircut, but we don't tip the sales person who finds us the perfect jeans. I really get kind of bitter about hair salon tipping. Isn't it already priced high? In restaurants, I kind of wish the owners would throw some of the money they get from charging me 2 1/2 times the price of a bottle of wine so I don't have to cough up so much cash for a tip.

When I went to Kenya and Tanzania the other year, I had to tip ladies in the bathroom! For what? They didn't help me pee...they just held the toilet paper hostage.

TIP or T.I.P.S...I seem to remember, and correct me if I'm wrong that tips were meant To Insure Prompt Service. Perhaps they should have sign saying, "Put money here if you appreciate our business and think I'm friendly"? I would put my 17 cents in that jar.

I do find it odd in cases like this - I mean, other retail workers also make crap wages, and I'm sure people would think it was entirely obnoxious if there were a tip jar at your local corner store. But I, too, have felt the guilt.
