I think I'm starting to teach angevin2's students. I definitely just read a production critique that was supposed to be of my production of the play Spring Awakening which went up last month. With some people, the only way to avoid being accused of hating men is to write only about dudes, with occasional supportive wives/manic pixie dream girls/dead little sisters. It's like that in a lot of SF (non-media) fandom. (ESCAPE POD FORUMS! ::shakes fist:: ...okay, that's a little unfair, they've gotten slightly better since the Great Too-Much-Gay-In-My-Rocket-Ship-Stories Flamewar of 2011.) People who believe this must think men are the most delicate and fragile souls in existence. Their boners will wither and die without constant praise! POOR MEN.
