A/N: This is my first time writing Madine, so PLEASE let me know what y'all think.

True Love

Matt couldn’t believe how much his life had changed in the last two months.  He had gone from not really having a family to having a large extended family.  He knew that he should be happy, but he couldn’t.  He was angry, angry at himself.  He should’ve never started to care for these people.  He should’ve never come to this cursed town.

“Hey,” Nadine said as walked past her.

He stopped and looked at her.  She was standing outside of the room of one of his new “family” members.  He saw the tears in her eyes before she turned back to the window.  Matt knew that he should keep walking, but he couldn’t.

“She’s going to pull through, so you can stop all that blubbering” he said, coming to stand beside her.

She smiled.  “These aren’t tears of worry or sadness, these are tears of envy.”

“You’re jealous of a woman who was attacked by two men, who has been fighting for her life for the past twenty-four hours?” he asked sarcastically.  “Nadine, sometimes I really worry about you.”

Nadine roller her eyes.  “I’m not envious of that you idiot.  I’m envious of their love.”

“I wouldn’t call it “their” love, it looks more like his,” Matt replied, looking through the window.

“Trust me Matt, it’s their love.  What I wouldn’t give to have a man look at me the same way he looks at her.  Like I was made for him and only him.”  Nadine bowed her head, feeling embarrassed.

“Aww, did the Prince fall off his white steed?”

“He’ll never love me the way he loved Emily, and I wouldn’t want him to.  True love only happens once, no matter how much you wish it didn’t,” she explained, going over to sit down on a bench on the other side of the hall.

Matt was thrilled that she had given up on Cassidine, but terrified at the same time.  She had such high standards for love.  He would NEVER be able to live up to them.  “So you dumped his sorry ass?” he asked, sitting down beside her.

“We agreed that it wouldn’t work out before he went out of town,” she explained, whipping a stray tear from her cheek.

“Well it’s his loss.  If you want to be someone’s one true love, then you shouldn’t settle for anything less,” he said gruffly.  He always knew Cassidine was an idiot.

Nadine gave him a big grin, before throwing herself in his arms.  “I know you don’t want to hear this, but you’re the best,” she whispered in his ear.

The tiny hairs on the back of his neck stood up when her soft lips brushed against his ear.  “Au contraire, I love hearing that I’m the best, because I am,” he replied, smiling against her delicate neck.

Nadine pulled back; her arms still locked around his neck, and looked into his eyes.  “Matt, you’re one of a kind, you know that?” she asked with smile.

“I’m not the only one, Nancy Drew.”  Matt smiled down at her and became lost in her beautiful eyes.  He knew he shouldn’t do what he was thinking, but he wasn’t sure he could stop himself and she didn’t look like was going to stop him either.  He lowered his head to hers, lips almost touching, when the door opened across the hall.

Matt and Nadine jumped apart like two teenagers caught by their parent’s on the front porch.

“My most humble apologies.  The Jackal didn’t mean to interrupt your private moment,” Spinelli explained from the doorway.

“No, Spinelli, that’s quite alright, I need to go check-in with Epiphany,” Nadine rambled as she jumped up from the bench and left, practically running down the hall.

Matt propped his elbows on his knees, holding his head in his hands.

“You need to tell the Noble Nurse Nadine how you really feel.  Take it from someone who knows.”

“Spinelli, you don’t know a damn thing,” he snapped, looking up at the man across from him.

“I know more than you think.  I almost lost the love of my life without her ever knowing how I truly felt.  I was afraid that she would turn me down, afraid that I wasn’t good enough for her, but I’m not afraid anymore.  If she doesn’t accept my love then she doesn’t.  You know what they say, ‘it’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all’,” Spinelli finished, turning to look through the window at Maxie.

“You don’t have to worry about her not accepting or returning your feelings,” Matt stated as he stood up.

Spinelli turned to face him.  “And you don’t have to worry either.”

Matt gave Spinelli a slight nod, before he turned down the hall.  Maybe he’ll take the geeks advice.  Maybe he could have the kind of love with Nadine that Patrick had with Robin and Spinelli had with Maxie.  Maybe he could be her one true love.  After all, she was his.
