Weather or not

Well, yesterday night it looked like things here were going to be very bad today. Freezing rain, iced over highways, etc. Not something in which one would like to drive. So we decided that we would not go to work today. Thus, when the alarm went off this morning, we shut it off ( Read more... )

You guys really need to visit the NOAA (www.noaa.gov and enter houston, tx) site... seriously, the weather channel or whatever the hell you guys are listening to is lame. Read the forecast discussions. They sound less like gibberish the more you read them.

Right now, the progs are looking at the "event" to happen tonight. It looks like it may stay north like the one last night. But the guy seems less certain and they should be updating later today.

And now I will be referring to that site instead - thanks! Oh, and it is totally annoying to me that it looks like the bad stuff is going to hit tonight and tomorrow instead. Grr.

Yeah, this is why the forecast discussions are so helpful. They represent the current thinking on what's going on. It's what the local weather guys are referencing when they come on at 10 with their analysis.

Take our case. The icestorm in OK wasn't supposed to hit until Friday eve. But I was looking at the discussions, which were indicating that the models were predicting other stuff. The NOAA mentioned that they would issue the ice storm warning for Friday at noon on Thursday night. So I knew my flight was in trouble. But weather.com didn't mention this until 10 am Friday.

Freakily, it hit from Austin to Albany, but Southern NJ didn't get any. While we're down from the 50s and 60s, not much has happened here.

Ditto the NOAA/NWS sites. The summary is good, the hourly graphs are good, and the discussion is fun. Our forecasters are amusing.

Living in Detroit, I can appreciate the poor weather and the poor weather predictions. We too had a prediction for a storm on Sunday night that didn't really materialize, only to have all of the rain that fell Sunday night freeze up on Monday night. Of course, no school on Monday but school in session on Tuesday. Everyone grupms that you call off school on the wrong day.

At least you guys had a day (or a partial day) off. Drive safe though if the weather does turn bad tonight.
